old photoStuart Basson is the historian at Chesterfield Football club.

He says  ’I was lucky enough to be allowed to borrow a load of photos from Jim Smallwood (ask your granddads!) and in amongst them I found this one.
Jim is closest to the camera on the left, while Tommy Flockett, another ex-Spennymoor man who enjoyed a long career with Chesterfield, is fourth from the left. Does anyone know any more about it? ‘

If anyone can give Stuart anymore information please reply to his post on the forum

Moors finally get their man!

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Spennymoor have signed Stephen Capper from Durham City and the 25 year old Dublin Born schemer is likely to be added to the team that travels to Ryton on Tuesday night. Capper has been a long target of Manager Jason Ainsley over the summer and the speculation finally ended when the quality overlapping full back or winger signed for the Moors to make him the fourth player from Durham City to arrive at the club over the summer. Capper played in 59 games for Durham City last season a they won the UniBond Division One North Championship.

Spennymoor win at home

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Spennymoor Town redressed their disappointing weekend performance with a convincing 4 – 1 victory over Co Durham rivals Consett. Following Saturday’s poor showing goalkeeper Niki Lawson was left out allowing Andrew Spence to make his bow for his hometown club. A readjustment of the formation saw the Moors adopt a 3-5-2 formation with David Gordon making way for Gavin Cogdon who along with Chris Mason, Paul Stephenson and Keith Graydon (all be it as Spennymoor Town) made their home debuts.

Spennymoor started brightly and within 20 minutes were a goal to the good as Anthony Peacock finished smartly cutting inside and shooting after some neat approach play involving the ever industrious Craig Ruddy. Spennymoor dominated the remainder of the first half without furthering their lead and suffered a blow as Gary Ormston equalised for the visitors when Spennymoor uncharacteristically failed to clear their lines.

With Spennymoor attacking up the bank in the second half the game continued in the same vane as the first with the Moors dominating but unable to add to their lead. This changed on the hour with the introduction of Michael Rae, our recent signing from Whitby, his clipped cross into the Consett penalty area was not dealt with and Gavin Cogdon was on hand to open his account and give Spennymoor a much deserved 2 – 1 lead. Further joy followed ten minutes later when Rae himself opened his moors account with a powerfully drilled shot across the Consett goal which struck the inside of the far post before nestling in the goal at the opposite post. Spennymoors fourth, in the final minute of normal time, resulted from great vision and a sublime lob from Rae who guided the ball over the on rushing keeper from 20 yards. In summary solid at the back, industrious and creative through the middle and clinical up front, a well deserved 3 points and an all round good performance which will hopefully lay the ghosts of last Saturday to rest.
