Ashington 18th April 2012 STL Div. 1

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Spennymoor Town stretched their winning run to six games thanks to a narrow victory over Ashington played in monsoon conditions at The Brewery Field.  With four league games to go, Moors have now moved one point behind leaders West Auckland as the league title looks to be going right down to the wire.

Moors were without the suspended Keith Graydon and Michael Laws, so made two changes to the team that beat Sunderland RCA just 48 hours earlier as Lewis Dodds replaced Graydon and Steven Richardson came in for Adam Johnston.  The conditions were difficult with the non stop rain making a greasy surface but both sides did their best to play fast flowing football. Moors were first to create an opportunity when Gavin Cogdon got to the by-line and his pull back saw Richardson and Anthony Peacock both go for the same ball and the chance escaped. Ashington then came even closer when Marc Walton picked up on a Richardson error to run at goal and curl a shot that came back off the woodwork.

The driving rain got worse with puddles forming in parts of the pitch but with the ball still moving across it, Teesside ref Anthony (more…)

Sunderland RCA 16th April 2012 League Cup QF

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Spennymoor Town marched into the semi-finals of the Brooks Mileson Northern League Cup as they beat Sunderland RCA for the fifth time this season in all competitions at The Brewery Field on Monday evening.

Moors now face a tricky semi-final against Division Two leaders Team Northumbria on Thursday 26th April.

In an evenly contested first half which saw both sides have chances, Moors got their noses in front six minutes before the interval thanks to a brilliant 25yd free kick from Keith Graydon. Steve Foster almost made it two on the stroke of half time but his header cannoned off the woodwork.

Moors dominated the second half and deservedly doubled their lead when Chris Mason’s long clearance saw Sonny Andrews race clear to finish past RCA keeper Neil Atkinson. After squandering further chances, Gavin Cogdon bent the ball into the top corner from an acute angle to stretch the lead before Andrews finished off the scoring in stoppage time with a clinical finish into the corner of the net. Moments earlier, Andrews hit the post and Jamie Harwood saw a first time shot well saved by Atkinson on the line.

After the game, Moors manager Jason Ainsley told The Northern Echo: “Although we didn’t play well, in the first half RCA didn’t have a shot at goal and we always looked a threat. Second half we were much better and scored the second at a crucial time and in the end it could have been a bigger score as RCA poured forward. To play them five times and only concede one goal from the penalty spot is testament to the lads at the back and the desire of the players.”

 Line-Up: Dean, Griffiths, Mason, Graydon, Ryan©, Foster, Ruddy(Harwood), Moore, Johnston(Andrews), Peacock(Dodds), Cogdon.

 Subs Not Used: Laws, Edwards

Billingham Synthonia 14th April 2012 STL Div.1

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Spennymoor Town kept the pressure on the title challengers with a convincing victory at mid table Billingham Synthonia. Moors made seven changes to the team that beat Norton in midweek as Jamie Harwood, Chris Mason, Michael Laws, Kieran Edwards, Lewis Dodds, Sonny Andrews and Steven Richardson were recalled with Mondays League Cup Quarter Final in mind which is probably why Jason Ainsley reshuffled his pack. Moors made a positive start to the game and dictated the tempo of the match which saw them create a host of chances. Making his first start for the club, Edwards shot from the right of goal that went wide before Anthony Peacock  then found Craig Ruddy who saw his shot from the edge of the penalty  area go wide of Josh Moody’s goal. Andrews then collected Edwards’ through ball but poked his effort high and wide.

It was only a matter of time before Spennymoor opened the scoring, as in the  9th minute a corner from the right by Ruddy cause mayhem for the home side and the ball fell for Richardson who fired home from close range.
Moments later, Moors lost the influential Stephen Capper to injury and he was replaced by midweek goal hero Leon Ryan. This change however didn’t spoil Moors’ rhythm as they continued to spread play from side to side and back to front but lacked a killer instinct in front of goal. Richardson saw his shot loop well over and shortly after headed over from an Edwards’ cross from the right. Two minutes later though, in the 32nd minute,  Spennymoor deservedly added a second. A Ruddy free-kick from the right saw  substitute Ryan nip in between two defenders to powerfully head home from the six-yard line. Billingham came back into the game and pulled a goal back in the 38th minute. Former Spennymoor Academy player Glenn Donaldson turned his marker on the right before delivering an inch perfect cross for Daniel Newby to glance his header past Robert Dean and into the left  hand side of the net. The last real chance of the half came to  Spennymoor when a Ruddy cross from the left saw Richardson sliding in,  but Moody managed to gather the ball.

Norton & Stockton Ancients 11th April 2012 STL Div.1

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Two Late goals kept alive Spennymoor Town’s slim title hopes against a dogged Norton & Stockton Ancients who frustrated The Moors at The Brewery Field on Wednesday night.

Moors kept the same side that won the Durham Challenge Cup on Friday morning and could have gone ahead inside the opening minute when Anthony Peacock’s 20yd shot took a deflection forcing Norton keeper Daniel Jeffery to push around the post for a corner.  That was as good as it got for Spennymoor in the opening stages as Norton carved out the better chances but wasted too many opportunities in front of goal. Callum Martin capitalised on a slip by Stephen Foster and as he advanced into the area his lay off picked out Dale Mulligan who shot wide from a good position.  Martin then followed suit by slicing an effort wide from Mulligan’s lay-off, and Lee Burrell saw his effort well saved by Moors keeper Rob Dean from close range.

With Norton playing deep and hitting Moors on the counter attack, the plan the visitors had worked well and restricted Moors to play (more…)

Durham Challenge Cup Final 6th April 2012

Sunday, April 8th, 2012
Spennymoor Town brushed aside holders Gateshead 3-0 to deservedly lift the Durham Challenge Cup for the first time in fourteen years.
Moors dominated the game from start to finish at The Hetton Centre against a Gateshead side with five full time professionals playing, however, underdogs Spennymoor really took the game to the Tynesiders and after Anthony Peacock had a goal ruled out for a foul on Gateshead keeper Tim Deasy, Adam Johnston opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a superb header from Danny Moore’s cross that crept in past the dive of Deasy at the near post.
Moors almost made it two when the excellent Gavin Cogdon cut in from the left to drill a low shot that Deasy blocked and Craig Ruddy hit the woodwork with the rebound.
Moors keeper Rob Dean commanded his area well after twice collecting headers from Chris Carrauthers and Johnny Evans, and then positioning himself well to cut out a left wing cross from Gateshead danger man Chris Moore.
On the stroke of half time, Moors got the killer second goal when a quick free kick by Keith Graydon released Cogdon inside the area and he made no mistake by firing under Deasy and into the back of the net to send the majority of the 500 plus crowd into euphoria.
Moors went into the second period with the wind in their sails and they still dominated and played some attractive football down both flanks and from back to front.
Johnston could have got his second goal when he rounded Deasy but delayed his shot from an acute angle and when it did break (more…)
